Cat First Aid


First Aid for Cats
is the immediate and temporary care given to an
ill or injured cat until it can be
taken to a professional veterinarian for medical care and attention.
The Goals of the Cat First Aid Course
To teach the participants how to:
- Be prepared for emergencies that involve their cat
- Protect themselves and their cat from further harm, injury or suffering during emergencies
by employing prompt, effective first aid actions and care.
After taking the course you will:
- Understand the importance of knowing the normal physical condition, behaviors and habits
of your cat.
- Be able to identify a normal heart and pulse rate, breathing rate and body temperature of cats.
- Know how to safely approach an ill or injured cat.
- Know how to safely capture and restrain a cat.
- Know how to check a cat that appears to be having a first aid emergency.
- Know how to check an unconscious cat for breathing and cardiac emergencies.
- Know how to give rescue breathing to a cat.
- Know how to perform CPR on a cat.
- Know how to care for a cat that is choking.
- Know how to care for shock for a cat.
- Know how to provide basic wound care and control bleeding for a cat.
- Know how to care for a cat with a suspected fracture.
- Know how to care for a cat with a suspected back or neck injury.
- Know how to care for a cat suffering from a burn.
- Know general care for a cat with a sudden illness.
- Know how to care for a cat that has a seizure.
- Know steps for caring for a cat that has been poisoned.
- Know general care for a cat with a sudden illness.
- Know how to care for a cat suffering from a cold- or heat-related emergency
- Know the items that belong in a pet first aid kit.
- Know what appropriate pet supplies should be included in an emergency preparedness
kit.
- Know what should be considered when making a plan for
your cat in the event of a
disaster that requires evacuation.
Cat First Aid is presented in approximately 2 hours, 30 minutes.
