Dog First Aid


First Aid for Dogs
is the immediate and temporary care given to an
ill injured dog until it can be
taken to a professional veterinarian for medical care and attention.
The Goals of the Dog First Aid Course
To teach the participants how to:
- Be prepared for emergencies that involve their dog
- Protect themselves and their dog from further harm, injury or suffering during emergencies
by employing prompt, effective first aid actions and care.
After taking the course you will:
- Understand the importance of knowing the normal physical condition, behaviors and habits
of your dog.
- Be able to identify a normal heart and pulse rate, breathing rate and body temperature of
dogs.
- Know how to safely approach an ill or injured dog.
- Know how to safely muzzle a dog.
- Know how to determine if a dog is experiencing a life-threatening emergency by checking
airway, breathing and circulation (ABCs).
- Know how to care for a dog that is having a breathing
emergency.
- Know how to perform CPR on a dog.
- Know how to care for shock for a dog.
- Know how to provide basic wound care and control bleeding for a
dog.
- Know how to provide care to a dog with a muscle, bone or
joint injury.
- Know how to care for a dog involved in a car accident.
- Know how to care for a dog with a sudden illness.
- Know how to care for a dog suffering from a cold-or
heat-related emergency.
- Know the items that belong in a pet first aid kit.
- Know what appropriate pet supplies should be included in an emergency
supplies kit.
- Know what should be considered when making a plan for
your dog in the event of a
disaster that requires evacuation.

First Aid is presented in approximately 2 hours, 30 minutes.
